Citizens Assembly Group outside Lambeth Town Hall

Lambeth citizens’ assembly: the news so far

The news earlier this year that Lambeth Council will be holding a citizens’ assembly on climate change was met with joy and scepticism in almost equal measures. While this is a huge step towards participatory democracy becoming part of the main stream our enthusiasm is tempered by the fact that over the years, many good people with just and important causes have been misled and let down by the Council.

A citizens’ assembly is a core demand of Exintion Rebellion and as a result, Extinction Rebellion Lambeth have been keeping a close eye on proceedings. It is our responsibility to do everything possible to ensure Lambeth gets the citizens’ assembly it deserves, one that can really make a difference, and the Lambeth political working group have been working overtime for the cause.

In July members of that working group made two strong public statements to the council, outlining our position and stating our intent. First, a letter to Claire Holland (Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for the Environment and Clean Air) and then an informed and impassioned speech during a council meeting.

This work will continue and if you would like to stay informed or get involved then head over to lambethca.earth to find out more.
