XR Rebels standing united

Extinction Rebellion is a decentralised movement. This means that we are empowered to design and plan our own actions with other Lambeth Rebels. The 3 demands along with a set of guiding principles ensure that the message is consistent across all XR groups around the world.

Actions are usually planned by Working Groups or Affinity groups.

  • A Working Group is a small group of people (usually between 5 and 20) specialising in and passionate about a particular topic or discipline. Anyone can join a Working Group, go to meetings and plan actions.
  • An Affinity Group is a smaller group, formed after NVDA (non-violent direct action) training and made up of people who support each other before, during and after actions. Members of Affinity Groups might also be members of one or more Working Groups.

Working Groups and Affinity Groups both support and are supported by the wider Local Group which in turn will support the National Group during actions. In this way people can have ideas and quickly put them into action, can donate time and energy and see its effect almost immediately and can easily come together and unite as a part of the wider National and International movement.

It takes most people a little while to get used to this so don’t worry if it’s not immediately clear! The best way to understand it is by getting involved.
